Let’s take a moment and think about the magic of reading.
Before a child ever picks up a book or learns to sound out words, there’s an invisible foundation quietly forming — and it’s called phonological awareness. It’s not just a buzzword; it’s one of the most critical building blocks for learning to read.
So… What Is Phonological Awareness?
Phonological awareness is a child’s ability to recognize and manipulate the sounds of spoken language. It includes skills like rhyming, syllables, onset and rime, and eventually, phonemic awareness — the ability to hear and work with individual sounds in words.
Children with strong phonological awareness tend to become confident, fluent readers. Those who struggle with it? Often face challenges later on with decoding, spelling, and reading comprehension.
That’s why starting early matters — really matters.
Why This Blog Exists
As an OG (Orton-Gillingham) certified teacher, I’ve spent years helping students build strong reading skills, one sound at a time. I’ve seen the frustration of children who are trying their best but just can’t seem to “crack the code.” I’ve also seen the joy in their eyes when it clicks — when all those sounds start to come together.
That’s why I started this blog — to support you. Whether you're a classroom teacher, a reading interventionist, or a homeschool parent trying to give your child the best start, you're in the right place.
How I Can Support You
I create resources that are:
Easy to follow (no need to spend hours planning)
Based on science (hello, Science of Reading!)
Kid-approved (because fun matters, too!)
Adaptable for both classrooms and home learning
Each week, I’ll be posting free tips, activity ideas, and behind-the-scenes looks all with you in mind.

Let’s Grow Together
Teaching phonological awareness isn’t just about helping kids read — it’s about building confidence, curiosity, and a lifelong love of learning. And you don’t have to do it alone.
